5.9 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia

(TNO) A strong earthquake of 5.9 magnitude has occurred this morning (19:12) in Indonesia's Sulawesi island, but no tsunami warning and no reports of casualties, according to AFP.

The earthquake occurred at 9 hours 23 minutes this morning (local time, ie 8 hours 23 minutes on the same day as GMT) with epicenter at a depth of 33 km, the Sulawesi city of Palu about 247 km to the south, agency for the U.S. Geological Survey said.

"There is some vibration but no great panic in Palu. So far no reports of casualties," technical director and Geophysics Agency Meteorology and Indonesia Suharjono said.

It is known that Indonesia is located on the "Ring of Fire" where the Pacific should be regularly exposed to seismic waves and volcanic eruptions.
